Q - What is meant by the term, nail fungus and how does it occur?
A - Nail fungus refers to a fungal growth that normally appears between the natural nail and the acrylic nail. It is normally caused by moisture becoming trapped between the layers providing the perfect condition for a fungal infection to grow. This can occur if the maintenance treatments are not carried out and the acrylic nail is allowed to lift. It may also occur if the client does not protect the nails with gloves whilst working in water. Once a fungal infection is spotted it is important to have the artificial nails removed immediately. A visit to the Doctor is normally recommended, as the fungus requires medical treatment to prevent it spreading.

Q - How long can a nail extensions be?
A - This is up to the individual. However, a nail
extension should not be any longer than one half of the existing nail plate, past the free edge. This means that two thirds of the nail has been built on the nail plate itself providing a stable anchor. The longer the nail, the weaker it tends to be with increased stress on the dividing (stress) line.
NOTE The stress line is the line where the nail grows over the end of the finger.

All artificial nails require Non-acetone nail varnish remover, as acetones will remove the surface of the nail. Re-education will need to take place concerning the wearing of gloves for housework, gardening, washing etc, to protect the nails from unnecessary knocks and stress.

Tips and Overlays
Tips are applied to the nail plate by nail adhesive. There are a variety of shapes and thickness' available to suit different nails. The match of the tip to the nail shape is important as the tip will not hold if there are any spaces. Please note that wetting of the hands unnecessarily might shorten the life of the tips.

Tips are blended into the natural nail at the seam. Overlays are normally applied to strengthen the tip and prolong the life of the artificial nail.
